Healthier Schools: Everyone Can Help

To support healthy food choices and physical activity at your school, a school-wide coordinated approach works best. It takes teachers, principals, parents, food service managers, and students to work together toward school wellness efforts. Please view this video on how you, as a parent, can do your part to promote healthy schools.

Prince William County Wellness Plan

In June of 2006, Division Wide Wellness Policy was approved for the implementation beginning the 2006-07 school year. The School Board approved the policy and wellness plan in response to a federal requirement that is based on the rising concern of obesity and student wellness. The content of the new Wellness Plan includes nutrition and physical activity guidelines, nutrition education goals, and staff wellness initiatives. All schools and central departments will be working towards the implementation of this plan over the next three years.

As described in the Wellness Plan, each school is to organize a Wellness Committee that provides resources and leadership in creating a healthier school and community.  The focus of this Committee is to enhance student, staff, and community awareness to support making healthy lifestyles decisions.  We encourage parents and other community members to become involved and ask about the plans for your school's Wellness Committee.

School Wellness Committees
Each year, all Prince William County Public Schools form Wellness Committees comprised of staff and community members. One member from each school is then selected to meet with the Wellness Advisory Committee (WAC). The Wellness Advisory Committee includes members from our community such as the Prince William Health Partnership. The meeting dates for the 2011.12 school year are Thursday, October 13, 2011, Thursday, January 19, 2012, and Thursday, April 12, 2012.
